WU XING -Five Elements
Variations in a harmonious universe
SMALL STORY
ABOUT 5 element PHILOSOPHY
The Traditional Chinese world view sees the Universe as a harmonious field of Qis
that complete and balance one another and in which everything is in perpetual transformation.
Having observed nature, the Chinese have witnessed the principal of the five elements
in the changing of the seasons and in all natural phenomena, as well as in everything human
– in the human being’s spiritual and emotional life as well as in the functioning of the body and organs.
Beginning with these principles, they have developed a system of correspondences
that intends to explain every phenomenon of existence and unite them through analogy.
The five elements are interdependent, because they are part of the nature cycle.
THEY GENERATE ONE ANOTHER:
Water generates wood, wood generates fire, fire generates earth,
earth generates metal and metal generates water.
THEY RESTRAIN ONE ANOTHER:
Earth blocks water, water puts out fire, fire melts metal,
metal cuts wood and wood penetrates the earth
As winter leads to spring, spring to summer…
As the seed to the plant, and the plant to the flower…
Thus a creative cycle is formed,
a variation of the harmonious universe in textile, art,
in a garment, in an image, in movement…
IN A HOLISTIC DANCE OF LIFE
